A Call for Crazy

So I have been watching this piece of shit show, Hemlock Grove, that thus far has been good for only two things: 1) Bill Skarsgård and 2) the most unbelievable yet supremely disgusting werewolf-transformation scene that I doubt can ever be topped. Therefore, seeing how I am in the mood for something crazy, now would be the perfect time to start my "Crazy Nikhat Month!".

Now what is "Crazy Nikhat Month!" you ask? Basically, I am not the kind of person who enjoys bizarre, surrealistic movies much. They freak me out, and thus the 'crazy' is for me and not the movies. I think it is my mathematical background that makes me react so, but seeing how I am a bigger film nerd than a math nerd, I think it is time for me to face these films, and even try and enjoy some of them. I did really love Holy Motors.

All of which brings me to my request to you, my fellow film nerds- give me a list of movies that "Crazy Nikhat Month!" should cover. Throw in all the Lynches and Cronenbergs and Herzogs and whatever you like. I am looking for a syllabus of 20-25 movies that I should ideally finish watching in May or latest June, since I have my exams in July. *Of course* I am going start this month right before my exams but meh, I'm crazy too.

SHOW ME THE CRAZY!

  1. Well the obvious ones would be Eraserhead and Naked Lunch, I think their the craziest things Lynch and Cronenberg ever did. The 70s horror film Don't Look Now fits the bill pretty well, although I have mixed feelings on that one, like it was just trying to be weird for the sake of it. Plus I just finished watching 8 1/2 for the first time a few hours ago, and that might not be a famously "crazy" film, but it had quite a lot of really surrealistic imagery and stuff too.

I might just have to do a film season like this to procrastinate from my exams too :)

    1. I have watched Naked Lunch and 8 1/2. Isn't Videodrome supposed to be the craziest?
Haha, oh no, what have I done! :P

  2. I have a bizarre film to recommend-It's a Macedonian film called Goodbye, 20th Century! The film is VERY hard to find directly, so luckily the whole thing is on youtube...

  3. Giorgos Lanthimos' Alps and Dogtooth are two I'd recommend for the craziness. I actually had Alps on my 2012 top 10 list with Holy Motors, though. :)

  4. I agree with Dogtooth and few more to add of my own -

    Audition
    The Secret in their Eyes
Hard Candy(Ellen Page at her Freakiest)
The Man from Nowhere(there is nothing you see on screen here but the idea behind it is pretty crazy)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead(If you haven't, do yourself a favour and watch it)
Any of Open Your Eyes/Vanilla Sky.

That should be enough for now. I'll be back if I think of some more. :)

  5. Oh, cool idea!

I can only think of few right now - Pi, Inland Empire, Solaris and The Cell.

  6. The Machinist is one of the more wild movies I've seen. Christian Bale's weight loss make eyes bug out of my head!

  7. If you still haven't seen it, Un Chien Andalou by Luis Bunuel; Eraserhead.

    1. I have seen Un Chien Andalou. I am convinced that if I am made to watch it on repeat, I will kill myself.

      Thanks for the suggestions, Lesya!
