Thoughts

Hello nice people who still read this blog even though I do nothing on it. How are you all? How is your day going? I hope your day goes well and everything is awesome and blah. My day, in case you're wondering, is not going that great. Firstly, I had this awful dream about lizards attacking me and I woke up pretty early because of that. Secondly, I have to go to the doctor's pretty soon because in spite of being Indian, I think I'm allergic to the Indian weather. Speaking of, the weather here is terrible right now. It's like summer came back all over again, and I don't like summer. I like winter. For one thing, my like perennial cold actually makes sense then. For another, I have this really adorbs woolen sweater with reindeer on it and I unfortunately only get to wear it then. Thirdly, my results come out today and I'm properly super nervous about them. We found out about it yesterday. I have little-to-no memory of giving my exams because I was so sleep-deprived throughout but I do remember not being particularly ecstatic about any of them, so that's not great. Lastly, I don't know how my day will end because of the results bit and that's also stressing me out. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Anyways, now that that's out if my system, let's get back to the world of cinema which is a world all of us care about unlike my stupid life and my stupid day.

Note: There's no way in hell I remember all the movie news announced in the last four months, since my last Thoughts post, and I'm not going to go through websites looking for them either.

1) SARAH POLLEY IS MAKING LOOKING FOR ALASKA!! I know that this is old news but I'm still very excited about it and I needed to acknowledge that on my blog. I know I have only seen one Polley movie, which is Stories We Tell, but god, it's one of the best movies I have ever seen and Looking for Alaska is one of the best books that I've ever read and it's SO fucking amazeballs that both of these are coming together. Even when I first read LFA, I had wanted a female director to make its movie because I just had a gut feeling that they'll do justice to it better than a male director can (See also: The Virgin Suicides, American Psycho) and yaay Polley is fantastic. I need this film in my life already.

2) In related news, the Paper Towns movie is also being made and they've cast Cara Delevingne as Margo Roth Spiegelman. This is pretty great news. I love Delevingne's look and energy. She was apparently the best part about The Face of an Angel, which showed at TIFF. My 13 year old brother is in love with her and one can understand why a character like Q, who is the protagonist of the story and will be played by the adorable Nat Wolff, will fall for someone like her. I already prefer this casting to that of The Fault in Our Stars because I still hate Ansel Elgort's face. The film will come out next year and will be directed by Jake Schreier who made Robot and Frank (which I have not seen. How is it??).

3) Matt Smith has been cast as Mr. Collins in the upcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I find this very odd. I always saw him as a Bingley. Mr. Collins is a clown and not in a good way. Still, I'm happy to see Smith in anything. The film also stars Lily James (Smith's current girlfriend btw), Sam Riley, Douglas Booth, Jack Huston and Bella Heathcote.

4) Fincher news- All of the Fincher stuff getting released nowadays is so interesting. From the fact that he cast Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne in Gone Girl because of his creepy smile to his new projects which include an HBO series he is developing with James Ellroy about the corrupt studio system in the 50s, which will be in the style of the classic film noir, and a TV series about 80s music video industry!! Is anyone else having major "Vogue" flashbacks? He also said that the sequels to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo may still get made which is something I kind of need in my life. Finally, did everyone watch and love his adverts for GAP? Fincher seriously needs to make a black and white movie already.

5) Jessica Chastain will star in Xavier Dolan's next film, which is also his English language debut, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. It's a satire of the gossip magazine business and Chastain is playing the antagonist, which is going to be delicious. Can you imagine how Dolan is going to dress her? *swoons* This is amazing news and I love the fact that all this sort of originated from a flirty Twitter convo between the two cinema geniuses (which is what they are).

6) Other casting news- Daniel Radcliffe's movie about the Brooklyn Bridge called *obviously* The Brooklyn Bridge now also has Brie Larson and Sir Ben Kingsley. Yaay! Love the idea of DanRad and Larson starring in a film together, although isn't she taller than him? There is going to be a Ben-Hur remake and I'm kind of okay with that because it will star Jack Huston and I love Jack Huston. It will also star Morgan Freeman and is being written by John Riley who wrote 12 Years A Slave.

7) Trailers- I just saw the trailer of Big Eyes. I like the look but I absolutely hate the song. Why would someone like Tim Burton use that song? I don't understand. A Most Violent Year looks pretty intriguing. I love the shot of Chastain at the end. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1 trailer is also out. I'm just too excited about Natalie Dormer being in this tbh.

8) Finally, it's almost time for the results so I'm just going to stop here and leave you with this beautiful man and his beautiful scruff-

Thoughts

        Just as I was writing this post, the news of Philip Seymour Hoffman's death came rushing through social media. Hoffman was a truly gifted actor. My first thought was the scene in The Master when he's in the cell next to Joaquin Phoenix and while the latter is going apeshit crazy, Hoffman's just standing there but we're still transfixed by him. Such was his screen presence. And the fact that he was just 46 is devastating. Both my parents are older than that and it's scary. Hoffman made every film he was in better. He will be sorely missed by film fans all over the world. One of the best we ever had. RIP.

          Going back to the trivial. (I'm sorry for the tonal shift)

1) Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor for the Batmas versus Superman movie. I'm sorry but WHAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTT?????????!!!!!!! Usually I am all for unconventional casting choices but this is proper Batshit (haha, like Batfleck) crazy. I know everyone's all like oh Luthor and Superman will be the same age and Eisenberg can play a great asshole etc. but that doesn't mean he should play Lex Luthor! I will admit that people trying to explain how Luthor and Mark Zuckerberg are the same person is pretty hilarious. Still, all I can visualise is Eisenberg doing a Dr. Evil. And please, just don't make him bald. His hair is beautiful. It's like real-life hobbit hair! He'll also look like a child in front of Henry Cavill's Superman. I mean, I knew this was going to be a terrible movie but I'm actually scared now. Has Eisenberg been hanging out with Shia LaBeouf? Why would he say yes to this? Is this like a social experiment? I don't understand!!!

2) All this madness has overshadowed an actual inspired casting choice in the same movie. Jeremy Irons will play Alfred. That's kind of awesome but still a big fat no to Eisenberg as Luthor. I'm going to go hug my The Social Network DVD and cry now.

3) Colin Farrell has replaced Jason Clarke in Yorgos Lanthimos's The Lobster. This is pretty exciting because I think Farrell is can be an amazing actor who just doesn't get the right roles that often. He was one of the best things about Saving Mr. Banks too. Rachel Weisz has joined the cast as well, which already includes Lea Seydoux and Ben Whishaw. This is going to be some movie.

4) So JK Rowling has announced that she regrets pairing Hermione with Ron and that she should have been with Harry instead. I love Ron and Hermione, but I feel in the movies especially, Harry and Hermione worked exceptionally well. And well, anything that breaks off the Harry-Ginny pairing is good in my eyes. Eitherways, this could turn into a very interesting drama about betrayal and heartbreak mixed with magic, so that could be cool! The only thing I feel bad about is the whole Ron is always the second-best concept. Fuck you and WEASLEY IS OUR KING!! I hope he ends up with some nice part-Veela.

5) In spite of her claims of wanting to take a break from acting, Jennifer Lawrence may star in yet another David O. Russell film. One of the co-writers of Bridesmaids, Annie Mumulo has written a script about Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop (wtf is that? Someone explain in the comments) and her rags to riches story. I do find the whole concept funny and I think JLaw can pull it off. Anyways, one has to wonder when this film will see the light of day since both JLaw and Russell are busy with other projects. Also, this Mangano lady also invented something called the Huggable Hangers so yaaay, SEQUEL!

6) Everyone is watching and loving True Detective, yes? If not, I don't think we can be friends anymore. That show is going AHMAZING and I think this will be Matthew McConaughey's finest performance ever. The writer of the show, Nic Pizzolatto, is already working on a draft for the second season and at the same time, his first book Galveston is heading for the big screen. I don't think Pizzolatto is writing the screenplay but the synopsis of the book is pretty cool and quite cinematic too. Matthias Schoenaerts is going to star in the movie.

7) Other casting stuff- Kyle Chandler, who was awesome in The Wolf of Wall Street, has joined the ever-impressive cast of Todd Haynes' Carol. Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan will reunite for College Republicans which tells the true story of the College Republican Chairman campaign of 1973. The film will be directed by their Kill Your Darlings director, John Krokidas. I like this pairing too much. In spite of all the dirty politics, the story is apparently something of a buddy comedy which sounds intriguing. Brie Larson will star in The Good Luck of Right Now, based on the book of the same name written by Matthew Quick, who also wrote Silver Linings Playbook, and will be directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who directed Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks. To this I say, FUCK YEAH!!!! Larson was one of the biggest surprises of 2013 for me and everyone else involved in this project is awesome. Benedict Cumberbatch will star in Blood Mountain, which follows a private military contractor who has to escort a very dangerous terrorist through a hostile region to bring him to justice. The film sounds pretty gritty and being a Cumberbitch, I am excited to see what Cumberbatch does with it. I am also a Pinenut and Chris Pine is going to play the protagonist in David Gordon Green's The Line, a thriller about a lonely patrol agent who has to protect a 10 year old child orphaned after a cartel shootout from people from both sides of the law. Again, this sounds exciting and I really want Pine to get a proper break because I think he's really talented. Felicity Jones will play Romeo's ex-lover Rosaline in Rosaline, written by the the people behind (500) Days of Summer. I think this can be a really funny story because as we all know, Rome and Juliet were idiots. Adrien Brody will star in Manhattan Nocturne about "a devoted husband and accomplished journalist who is asked by a seductive stranger to dig into the unsolved murder of her husband." I am forever waiting for Brody's next great performance so count me in! Finally, Liam Neeson has joined Martin Scorsese's next, Silence, about a Jesuit priest's journey to Japan and his encounter with religious persecution. The film also stars Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe. I want this movie now!

8) Coming back to TV, none other than Michael Pitt has joined the cast of the eagerly anticipated season 2 of Hannibal. He will be playing Mason Verger, the character played by Gary Oldman in the movie Hannibal. Few of us can ever forget Verger's mutilated face in the movie and it really is a scrumptious role (adjective keeping in theme with the show of course) as he is one of Hannibal Lecter's most brutal nemeses. Still, one would hope that we get to see Pitt's gorgeous face before Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal has his way with him.

9) Links- Stevee lists down the Practical Reasons Why Leo DiCaprio Doesn't/Shouldn't Have an Oscar Yet, Tumblr. It's pretty accurate and everyone should read it. Margaret talks about the aforementioned newest bestest show ever, True Detective. This weekend has seen a lot of talk about Dylan Farrow and Woody Allen and since I am such a fan of the latter's work, the weeks since the Golden Globes fiasco have been a sort of reassessment for me about what I believe in when it comes to things like this. The closest thing to what I feel and think is this fantastic article by Nathaniel R. of The Film Experience. Lastly, there have been wonderful articles all across the web about Philip Seymour Hoffman and there's no point linking to just a few. Check them all out.

10) Trailers- The first trailer of The Fault in Our Stars, which is based on John Green's fantastic love story about two teenagers with cancer, is out. People are going nuts about it. I admit that I got weepy while watching it too but I'm a bit concerned about how the trailer makes the story look almost sappy. One of my favourite things about the book and Green's writing in general is the sense of humour of his characters, which is what makes them so real. The trailer does show that Shailene Woodley is definitely the perfect Hazel though Ansel Elgort is still no Gus. The Rover looks quite bleak and though I haven't seen Animal Kingdom yet, I think I will like it. Love Guy Pearce and I think RPatz will be good in this. The trailer of Nymphomaniac part 2 keeps me as intrigued as always. Love the music. I liked Prince Avalanche a lot and its director David Gordon Green's new movie Joe has a trailer now. It stars Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan. It's great to see Cage doing something serious instead of stealing government documents or whatever, and Sheridan is still one of my most favourite performers of last year for his work in Mud, so I'm excited to see what he does too. I think I am one of the only people who found the trailer of Seth MacFarlaine's A Million Ways to Die in the West really funny. The "Mila Kunis" part killed me. One of my most favourite movies of last year, The Lunchbox has a US trailer out. Everyone should watch it. The latest trailer of Maleficent is the best one yet, thanks to Lana Del Rey's creepy rendition of "Once Upon A Dream" and Angelina Jolie's smile. I love it. Terry Gilliam is back with The Zero Theorem which has Christoph Waltz in the lead role, along with David Thewlis, Tilda Swinton and Ben Whishaw. It looks really weird and surreal, which is expected from Gilliam. It can either be something really fantastic or a total fail. I'm hoping for the former. A Long Way Down which based on a Nick Hornby book and stars Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots and Rosamund Pike, looks very sweet and heartwarming. While watching the Super Bowl trailer of Transformers: Age of Extinction, all I could think of was how much I wanted to rewatch Pacific Rim. Still, I am willing to give Michael Bay and Mark Wahlberg a chance after Pain and Gain. The jokes in the latest trailer of The Amazing Shit-Man 2 fall so flat that I don't get why they're trying at all. As it is the idea of a 30 year old teenage Peter Parker, Electro's look, Oscorp's abysmal security and an actual metal rhino are going to provide enough comic relief. I am only going to watch this film for Dane DeHaan because I already know that it will waste the talents of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone once again. DeHaan might make something meaty out of his role, and I like his face. It's nice. One only has to look at the trailer of Captain America: The Winter Soldier to see what all the Amazing Shit-Man team are doing wrong. The action looks great, there's proper intrigue in the trailer, the set pieces and the effects feel cinematic and the little joke at the end is actually funny because people aren't trying so hard. My two favourite trailers of last week are those of Beauty and the Beast and Enemy. The first looks so beautiful and I love the idea of Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel playing Belle and the Beast respectively. The latter looks like a most interesting psychological thriller and I adored Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners, which was his previous collaboration with Denis Villeneuve, the director of Enemy. I'm really stoked for both these films.

11) Finally, the Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue has a non-whitewashed cover and it looks pretty great-

Thoughts

WAAZZZZAAAAA GUYSSSSSSS!! My weekly thoughts is back after a 2 month hiatus. Don't ask me why I stopped writing them. I started many but the news kept piling up and the thought of typing more just brought out the lazy ass in me. So now with the new year, I am going to start afresh with all the most recent movie stuff.

1) This is really the most important news- Paul Rudd is going to be Ant-Man in Edgar Wright's Ant-Man!!! Hurrah!!!!!! I lurve Paul Rudd and I really admire Wright for choosing actors like Rudd or Simon Pegg or Michael Cera, who aren't really "hero material" but they totally kick ass in his movies. Rudd will be playing Scott Lang and none other than Michael Douglas will play Dr. Hank Prym who in the comics is apparently the original Ant-Man and the guy who invents the technology that enables people to get minitiurized or whatever. The film will release in the 2015 during the slot when the Batfleck-Superman movie was going to come out. The latter has changed dates because of some reason that I don't care about.

2) Casting: Daniel Radcliffe continues to build an interesting career and his next project is Brooklyn Bridge about the brilliant but rookie engineer who has to oversee the building of the Brooklyn Bridge after the death of his father. There's a rumour that Gwyneth Paltrow will play his wife. I hope to god that does not happen because it is wrong on so many levels. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going to star in the fictional take on renowned documentary Man on Wire. It is called To Reach the Clouds and it will be directed by Robert Zemeckis. The John Belushi biopic starring Emile Hirsch as the titular character has found its Dan Aykroyd in The Spectacular Now's Miles Teller. In spite of what I felt about the movie, I think Teller has great potential and this film sounds really interesting. Sarah Paulson has joined the cast of the Todd Haynes-directed Carol which will have Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara playing the leads. I love this beyond words. The Duchess of Ray Bridge herself, Margot Robbie is going to play Jane in the upcoming Tarzan movie that has Alexander Skarsgard donning the loincloth (hopefully!) and swinging from trees as our hero. This will obviously be a hot effing movie and I almost wish that it is R-rated because why not :)

3) Joe Wright's Pan is building up quite an ensemble. Hugh Jackman is going to play Blackbeard, the villain, and Garrett Hedlund is going to play Captain Hook who isn't apparently bad in this version. It was previously reported Hedlund would play Peter Pan which I thought was just strange, but Hedlund and Jackman will be a nice pair of hot pirates. Now we just have to cast Keira Knightley as Wendy or Tinkerbell.

4) So Quentin Tarantino wrote a first draft of a proper western, since Django Unchained wasn't proper enough or whatever, called "The Hateful Eight" but someone leaked it online, causing him shelve the project completely. While it is true that I will follow Tarantino to the ends of earth and he might be the only person who can get me interested in westerns, I am kind of glad because I want him to tackle new genres and give them his Tarantino-ian twist. It seems that is exactly what might be in store for us because he may be working on a script based on the Robert Blake case, about a 70s TV star who murdered his wife and was sued by his children. It could be a legal thriller, which in itself is a pretty cool genre, but what Tarantino will do with it is even more fun to speculate about. Could he possible go back to something like Jackie Brown even? Now I'm getting excited!

5) Rumour has it that Pixar might be making it's own Star Wars movie. I have nothing more to say other than I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!

6) The Sundance Film Festival just got over and many of the indies that we might be talking about the rest of the year till next awards season were shown. The films that have caught my eye the most are Whiplash, which won a number of prizes, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, Richard Linklater's epic that took twelve years to make, Boyhood, Anton Corbijn's A Most Wanted Man starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Fassy-in-a-head movie, Frank, the Belle and Sebastian movie, God Help the Girl, Life After Beth starring Dane DeHaan and a zombified Aubrey Plaza (which sounds so perfect!!) and vampire flick A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Also, The Raid 2: Berandal has gotten some rave reviews so really excited about that one too.

7) Lately, I have been reading a lot on the inevitable Jennifer Lawrence backlash. I think it is a really interesting cultural phenomenon, or rather she is. For someone who was so widely loved this time last year, a lot of people seem to despise her at present. But this is balanced by an equally rabid group of fangirls who will like cut you, virtually of course, if you say anything bad about her. I find it fascinating because JLaw at present represents both sides of our "Tumblr" age. Also the fact the she is probably the only female towards whom there is such complete devotion. I get why people like her- she's funny, pretty, relatable, a good actor and she is part of one of the biggest franchises in the world right now. I also get why people don't like her- all those incessant Buzzfeed posts, Oscar + Catching Fire + American Hustle + another Oscar nomination which is definitely undeserved. The fact that both of these things have happened within the course of one year is kind of unfortunate, because she has at least 3 big releases in the next two years, Mockingjay parts 1 and 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past, so she's not going anywhere any time soon. And the dissenting voices will become even louder if by any chance she does manage to win the Oscar because it will then definitely become a popularity thing. This will be bad for both parties, even though the fangirls may not realise it yet, because she *will* almost definitely peak then and we might have to wait quite a while before she can give her next great performance that people will care about. I for one am still a fan, of both Jennifer Lawrence, the actress, and Jennifer Lawrence, the personality. Even if she might be putting on a show, I like that a 23 year old can be both neurotic and charming and may not have everything figured out even though she's a huge star. It's affirming.

8) Score-wise: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have re-teamed with David Fincher and are going to score his upcoming thriller, Gone Girl. I still listen to The Social Network score and I just rewatched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its opening continues to give me chills. Also, Carter Burwell will score the aforementioned Carol (and not Clint Mansell, *who* scored Stoker. I'm and idiot) so that is awesome. Most importantly though, Danny Elfman will score Fifty Shades of Grey! Woo hoo! I'm so excited to hear the music between the spanking and the sex noises!!!!!!

9) Speaking of, the teaser poster of Fifty Shades of Grey has released. It looks a lot like Dhoom 3's poster, which is just an odd connection. I don't like the font but Jamie Dornan, if it indeed is him, has a nice suit and a nice butt. These are my observations.

10) Andrew of Encore's World of Film & TV is doing his Motifs in Cinema blogathon again and I will be taking part this time 'round. I will be looking at the "coming of age" movies of 2013.

11) Trailers- Starred Up starring Jack O'Connell and Rupert Friend looks like a pretty intense film. I have loved O'Connell since his Skins days and this is a good year for him (he is the lead in Angelina Jolie's Unbroken). Karen Gillan stars in creepy horror flick Oculus. I was anyways going to watch it for Gillan but apparently it's also pretty good according to the TIFF'13 reports, so yaay. There isn't a trailer out yet but the clip from Fassy and Domhnall Gleeson starrer Frank looks really quirky and fun. Coming to television, Sam Mendes-produced Penny Dreadful has two teasers out (1, 2) and looks kind of generic but I love Eva Green and my 13 year old self still believes in Josh Hartnett, so I will be keeping an eye out for it. Finally, Hannibal season 2's trailer is out and it's beautiful. Can't wait for more murders that look like pretty works of art and Mads Mikkelsen in a bloody unbuttoned shirt!

12) Finally, Jonah Hill is living every girl's dream-

Forget getting Oscars for their performances in WoWS, they should be getting fucking Oscars for this! I heart them so much.

I also want to marry Leonardo DiCaprio.

Dream Actors I Want to See Star in Wes Anderson Films

       Hello people! As you may have figured out, I am a bit out of ideas for the blog. Anna was kind enough to suggest this idea to me on Twitter and here I am!

          With the recently released poster and trailer for Wes Andersons highly anticipated eighth feature, The Grand Budapest Hotel, everyone's been buzzing about the filmmaker and the incredible cast he has amassed for the film. There are a number of new names there, none more impressive and frankly perfect as that of Ralph Fiennes. I have been going a bit crazy about it all and therefore Anna suggested that I should make my own list of dream actors that I would like to see in a Wes Anderson movie.

         I must say that I took the idea up rather excitedly and got 31 names the first time. I have narrowed the list down to 14 actors, who I have chosen for many reasons such as curiosity, intuition or maybe just their looks.

Honourable mentions: Mark Ruffalo because who doesn't want to see a Brothers Bloom reunion, Joaquin Phoenix because who doesn't want to see him in everything ever, and Emily Blunt because she's adorable and sexy.

The obvious one

Johnny Depp

If you recall, there was a rumour that had started about Johnny Depp starring in The Grand Budapest Hotel. I had become very excited because this would have been exactly the kind of role Depp needed to get out of this awful weird-character-blockbuster muck he's been stuck in. Unfortunately, it all ended up being totally untrue and while I am more than happy about Fiennes, I do still want a Depp-Anderson collaboration to take place. Before Depp became a big star, he was the guy who starred in interesting off-beat films and made a name for himself. A film with Anderson would be a return to such films for him. And yes, some of us do think that Depp should put his eccentric side to rest but even at their most quirky, Wes Anderson characters have very human aspects to them, and I think Depp still has enough talent left in him to play someone like that.

The curious cases

Marion Cotillard, Daniel Day Lewis

Ralph Fiennes is usually considered a dramatic actor but anyone who has watched In Bruges and, well, the trailer of The Grand Budapest Hotel, know that he has the most surprising comic side to him. Cotillard and Day-Lewis are two actors whose comedic side I would really like to see. The former has mentioned in interviews that she would like to do something funny and I think she has the kind of beauty that would work really well in a Wes Anderson movie. And as for the latter, I have only ever seen him play very serious roles and considering what a great actor he is and just how sweet he seems in real life, I am very curious to see how he would tackle something lighter. As mentioned above, Anderson's movies are a unique blend of quirky and dark and actors such as these two can do wonders.

The ones I think will just belong- males

Michael Shannon, Christoph Waltz

Right? There is something about Shannon, in spite of his towering figure and crazy eyes, that I can see fitting in a Wes Anderson movie. I mean even though he usually plays somewhat scary characters, he kind of makes me laugh because of the slight confused expression he always has on his face and I think that's interesting. As for Waltz, I think he'll be perfect. Think about Willem Defoe's character in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and try telling me that Waltz wouldn't have been cast in that role if the film had been made after his big Hollywood breakout. His dialogue delivery, comic timing and general awesomeness will really work in a Wes Anderson movie.

The ones I think will just belong- females

Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence

The American Hustle girls! But seriously, I think both of these women can do the sexy, lonely, misunderstood, deadpan thing that the female characters in Wes Anderson movies have. In case of Adams, firstly think about her hair and how it will look in the Wes Anderson colour palate. Next is the fact that she can do both funny and icy really well and that combination can work wonders. As for Lawrence, Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook when she's not being manic is pretty much a female character from a Wes Anderson film. I think she has that down.

My Brit obsessions

Daniel Radcliffe, Arthur Darvill

I am loving Radcliffe's career choices so far and it will be great if he gets to work with someone as brilliant as Anderson. I think he's talented enough and then there is also his height. Honestly, I just thought of Jason Schwartzman in Rushmore and Tony Revolori in The Grand Budapest Hotel and then came to the conclusion that DanRad will fit right in. That's how my brain works. As for Darvill, he has a natural quirkiness and oddness to him and he can be very funny very effortlessly and I think he would do great in a Wes Anderson film. Also, I think both of them can embody the struggling genius motif that runs through many of Anderson's films pretty well.

The Indians

Kalki Koechlin, Nimrat Kaur

One of my favourite things about Wes Anderson is his affinity towards India. He has set a film in India and has worked Indian actors like the late great Kumar Pallana, Waris Ahluwalia and the amazing Irrfan Khan (something I had forgotten because he was in this list earlier). So I really wanted to include Indian actors. However, the problem with Bollywood actors, which is more my area of expertise, is that they tend to overplay while acting which just won't work. Having said that, there are a number of Indian actors who do have the kind of subtlety that will be better suited to an Anderson film. Koechlin just has such a unique look (thanks to her part-Indian-part-French heritage) that I think she will be brilliant in a Wes Anderson movie. Kaur, on the other hand, has a very Indian look. She's obviously beautiful but she isn't as glamorous as the other Bollywood actresses and so if anyone was to play a real Indian woman, she would be perfect. And both of them are fantastic actors of course.

I just really really want to know what this will be like

Woody Allen, Diane Keaton

I know what you're thinking but let me explain. The moment this crazy idea came into my head, I tried to brush it away as something totally mental but it just kind of stuck along with a big "What if..." Just try and imagine Allen and Keaton as directed by Wes Anderson. Don't you want to watch that? I sure do.

McAvoy has the most ridiculous blue eyes on the planet, which is something everyone knows. Now all I want is to see them in a Wes Anderson movie with the Wes Anderson colours. Come on, you know you want it too...

Helloo people! After being buried in my books for about a month, I have resurfaced albeit momentarily, although the days of freedom are not far behind. The only reason I am writing this post is because I cannot stop watching the Kill Your Darlings trailer and I'm wasting time on it anyways so it kind of makes sense.

I am really excited for this movie. Earlier it was mostly because of my undying love for Daniel Radcliffe, then for the cool and talented cast of up-and-coming actors, but after watching the trailer, my interest has properly been piqued because the film looks fun and interesting and dark. I think it is a really good trailer that does not give much away and gives a proper little taste of the kind of film Kill Your Darlings may be. Of course I am a little apprehensive after last year's On the Road (which wasn't bad but just disappointing), but I am going to hope for the best.

Thoughts

I don't know how but I have gotten into this terrible habit of posting my weekly thoughts every two weeks. I am late today as well and will probably be next week too as I am going to UAE for my summer hols. I promise to work on being better though.

1) First of all, Something Is Afoot.

2) Old, old news to get off my chest- Lee Pace will be the villain in Guardians of the Galaxy. Even though this means that all of his beauty will probably be burried under tons and tons of make-up, I am really happy that Pace is getting the big break he deserves. He is also in talks to star in the second season of Hannibal, along with fellow-Pushing Daisies stars Kristin Chenowyth and Anna Friel. Him, Mikkelsen and Dancy- yummy! (See what I did there?) Next, people are trying to remake The Crow, which I feel is an excellent idea because the story and the character are very interesting and the 1994 original is almost too cult to do them justice. Among the people whose names have been thrown around for playing the titular character are James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston (who would have been perfect, imo), and now Alexander Skarsgard is in talks. Speaking of Hiddles, he will be starring in a Robert Capa biopic along with fellow Marvel-actor, Hayley Atwell. Me likey. His Marvel brother Chris Hemsworth is going to star in a new Michael Mann cyberthriller along with Viola Davis. I think this is a very interesting pairing and am excited to see what comes out of it.

3) Jessica Chastain is in talks to star in Christopher Nolan's next big space adventure movie, Interstellar. She will join Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Nolan-regular, Michael Caine. Give me this movie NOW!

4) Daniel Radcliffe continues to make bold, cool choices with his post-Potter career. He is going to star in the adaptation of Tokyo Vice which is based on a true story about a reporter whose crime stories and a final scandal get him into trouble with a Yakuza boss. It is going to be directed by music director Anthony Madler, who is making his feature film debut with this. I really like how this sounds. Let's hope it's awesome and DanRad with it.

5) Paul Thomas Anderson is set to start shooting his next film Inherent Vice this month. It will star his The Master-collaborator, the great-faced Joaquin Phoenix (what a face, man!). I am still a bit sad that Robert Downey Jr. won't be in it instead. I think he and PTA would have made quite a pair. Still, cinephiles everywhere are rejoicing of course.

6) Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman are going to "Bard" it up in Justin Kurzel's adaptation of Macbeth. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Scottish play when we studied it in school, but if anyone can make me change my mind, it is Fassy. I think he will be perfect. And Portman, who so cleverly joined this project after being denied the chance to work with Fassy in the now-annoying-with-its-casting-problems Jane Got A Gun, is a very intriguing choice to play Lady Macbeth, who was probably the only character I liked in the play. Kurzel, whose debut film Snowtown is apparently very violent, is again a most interesting choice as the director. I can see this working v. well.

7) Other casting news- Bradley Cooper is going to star in Steven Spielberg's next American Sniper, which is based on the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. I have become quite the Cooper fan since Silver Linings Playbook and am thus looking forward to this film. My husband, Logan Lerman, has joined Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf in David Ayer's World War 2 tank drama Fury. The film is about a five-man American tank squadron who go to Germany to fight off Nazi forces. Lerman, according to the site, will play, "Norman Ellison, an Army typist and the youngest and most inexperienced member of the crew who is thrust into being a tank gunner." Sounds pretty good to me.

8) Only one poster worth talking about really, and that is of Lars Von Trier's potentially v.v.v.v.v.v.v.v.v.v. controversial new film, Nymphomaniac. I think it is brilliant. People have been calling it a Tumblr fan poster, but that's exactly what I love about it. Fan posters often highlight the most important features of the respective film and just drown out all the noise and that is what this poster is doing. This two-part film is about the sexual journey of a woman, played by the underrated Charlotte Gainsbourg, and the poster is implying this in the most simplest of ways. Genius!

9) Trailers- The Bling Ring's official trailer is making me want this film even more than I do, which is A LOT. Also, I am so going to be talking like (well, trying to) Emma Watson for a week after I watch this. Thor: The Dark World looks cool, especially with Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor at its helm. I expect loads of fight scenes. My favourite part of the trailer is Loki, obviously. Violet and Daisy looks very interesting and lovely. Love the duo of Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore!) and Saoirse Ronan. Kristen Wiig's follow-up to Bridesmaids, Girl Most Likely looks like a whole lot of fun. I think she and Annette Benning, who plays her mum, are a charismatic and awesome match, and Matt Dillon and even Darren Criss are great. Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing looks so so so so good and I really hope it releases here. I am certain that I will love it. Finally, for trailer of the week, Pacific Rim looks unfuckingbelievably out-of-this-world fantastic! 2500 tons of awesome to be exact. I can't wait to watch this now.

10) Finally, my most anticipated film of all time has started filming-

Thoughts

1) 100 FOLLOWERS! YESSSS!


Thank you everyone who follows this blog. I really never expected this to happen. So happy. All of you guys rock!

2) Sam Mendes will not direct Bond 24. A part of me wants to boo this decision after his brilliant work in Skyfall, and a part of me is glad because in case he didn't deliver, it might have marred that very work. I can't really think of a director right now, but I do hope the producers decide to walk down a similar path and find a director who can continue exploiting the more dramatic and deeper side of James Bond.

3) The Harry Potter stars have got it going on! Daniel Radcliffe, aka my favourite person in the world, is in talks to star as Igor in the sci-fi retelling of Frankenstein that has been penned down by Chronicle's Max Landis. I think this sounds like all kinds of bizarre awesomeness, what with the Frankenstein character reportedly being "pathologically dirty and dressed in old clowns clothing." I am really looking forward to it and DanRad's work in it. Also speaking of re-imaginings, Emma Watson might star as the eponymous heroine in the live action version of Cinderella with Cate Blanchett as the Evil Stepmother and Kenneth Branagh at the helm as director. I think she will be a lovely Cinderella.

4) Anchorman 2 is one of my most anticipated films of this year and after news of Kristen Wiig and James Marsden joining the comic cast, the ultimate hero-actor, Harrison Ford, too will be seen in the film. It is becoming damn near impossible to wait for this film. It is going to be gold.

5) Posters- Iron Man 3 has a ton of posters out. I do like the Pepper Potts poster and (I'm guessing) the final poster but I absolutely lurve the Tony Stark character poster. I would actually like to own it. It's badass.  Also speaking of excellent posters, the latest Spring Breakers poster is super girly and violent and I adore it. The new Hangover 3 poster trying to mimic the final Harry Potter posters is just hilarious. Coming to TV shows (WHICH ARE GOING TO FINALLY START IN MARCH! WOO HOO!), Doctor Who has a new poster out with the Doctor, Clara and a whole lot of upcoming villains whose images are hidden in the shards of glass. Also Game of Thrones has character posters out and they are awesome. Even fucking Joffrey gets one, though I am pretty sure it's for people to throw things at.

6) Links- Mette is turning 18 soon. She's far too cool for someone so young and is celebrating this fact on her blog with a series of The Upcoming Adult lists. They are fantastic. Speaking of, Ryan at The Matinee has written nearly 2000 posts! 1999 to be exact with the 2000th one coming out later today. I'll probably be 70 by the time I reach that many posts, so a huge congratulations and also a pat on the back to him. Also, do check out Anna's musings on the ultimate cinephile question- "Why movies? Why not books, music, art? What elevates film above all else?" Excellent read and something I really understand and agree with.

7) Trailers- Frances Ha, which looks hilarious and weird and something I would seriously enjoy. I have been waiting for it since TIFF last year. Spring Breakers that is looks like a truly strange, alluring, crazy film and I am actually looking forward to it. The latest Iron Man 3 trailer is the best one yet, and I am finally fully pumped for this film. I was scared that this film will take too serious a tone, but I can see the glimpses of humour and one-liners in it, so I am a happy bunny now. In TV land, the new Hannibal show looks pretty intense and I think it will be great. Finally, the Game of Thrones, Season 3 extended trailer has made me hungry for this show again. It looks epic and god I love Tyrion and the dragons!

8) Finally, I am going to leave you with David Bowie's latest music video, starring his androgynous alien soulmate, Tilda Swinton. As I read somewhere, and agree whole-heartedly, Bowie probably started making new music again so that Swinton could star in his videos.

My Misadventures with the Oscars

      My late-ish thoughts on the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

Fellini, about the Oscars from Fellini on Fellini

- I was not feeling the Oscars till about 1 a.m. last night and then I could not fall asleep due to the excitement. This was a bad thing since I had to give a film studies exam after eight and a half hours and I had officially stopped giving a shit.
- I woke up at 5:30 a.m. after having slept for only two and a half hours give or take. I was going to start studying but I decided to go on Twitter and Tumblr instead and start freaking out over everyone's dresses.

- Favourite dresses were La Chastain and Miss Adams. A goddess and a princess, both redheads.
- Speaking of men, Daniel Day-Lewis and Christoph Waltz were hot stuff in blue and Daniel Radcliffe, Hugh Jackman, Chris Pine and George Clooney looked amazing too. Sexy older men ^^

- Kristen Chenowyth was so annoying on the red carpet. Someone tranquilize her.
- Anne Hathaway, why? It will forever be known as the nipple dress. Ask the twitter account.
- So anyways, show starts.
- I can't come to a conclusive opinion on Seth MacFarlane's hosting. It was incredibly offensive most of the time and many jokes fell flat, but his musical stuff and the random jokes in between were pretty funny. I don't hate him though. Just the song "We Saw Your Boobs". Maybe because I did not expect much.

- Speaking of the good stuff, Charlize "The Goddess" Theron dancing in a flowy gown (with Channing Tatum) followed by a number by Daniel "My Dream Husband Since 2001" Radcliffe and Joseph "Adorbs" Gordon-Levitt (and Seth MacFarlane) were just awesome. I forgive the entire ceremony just for these two things.

- I liked the Flight-sock puppet thing.
- First award of the night, Best Supporting Actor, went rather deservedly to (though not my first choice) Christoph Waltz. He quoted Tarantino. Most successful Tarantino actor ever.

- Did anyone think of Leo?
- Oh Paul Rudd and Melissa McCarthy = worst presenters ever. Which did not even make sense because they are usually adorable and hilarious but I could not understand what the hell was going on. Paperman and Brave won though, so yaay for animation!
- A number of The Avengers came to present the visual categories. No Chris Hemsworth, ScarJo or Hiddles though. Once again, I must request the Oscars to give Robert Downey Jr. as Oscar for being himself.

- Worst win of the evening- cinematography. For two years now, this award has been given to the wrong person. I mean, Roger Deakins in Skyfall was beyond spectacular. Someone give him 10 or 20 Oscars already.
- Visual effects for Life of Pi made sense because Richard Parker is a beauty (even though I officially want James Bond to kill him now).
- Orchestra kept playing the Jaws theme to make the winners shorten their speech. It was funny the first time with Life of Pi and all. After that, it was plain rude.
- Anna Karenina won Best Costume and Les Mis won Best Make-up. I agree on the first one though I wish Ishioka would have won. The latter is a pointless category because Cloud Atlas was not nominated.
- The James Bond tribute was mainly shit. None of the Bonds even came. However Dame Shirley Bassey was on!
- The direction was all over the place. They cut to De Niro and Bradley Cooper after some black thing and then didn't show reaction shots for any of MacFarlane's jokes. I heard people laughing. Dunno :/
- Documentary was given out. That dude with that awesome accent was awesome.
- The musical tribute- Catherine Zeta-Jones has still got it. Jennifer Hudson got a standing ovation- what? She was just screaming.

      At this point I had to leave to go give my exam. I thought it was a clever decision to leave before Russell Crowe started to sing. Anyways, I was incredibly annoyed throughout the exam and I wrote at breakneck speed and with total disinterest. I should pass but I couldn't care less. Once I finished, I tried checking the results on my phone but the goddamn thing had to die on me then (technology sucks balls) and then I stood like an idiot for fifteen minutes waiting for the traffic flow to change when it wasn't going to for another hour. The ride back home was long and irritating and hot. However, once I was near functional technology again, I was very happy with the results.

- So back to the point I left off. Another good reason to have gone before the Les Mis number-

       WHAT IS AIR?! I could not have concentrated on my exam if I had seen this before. I really liked the entire performance. Even Russell Crowe couldn't ruin it.

- Chris Pine! I wish he would have presented with Benedict Cumberbatch though.
- Ugh Ted and Jew jokes. Anyways, aren't the computer generated stuff on the Oscars totally awkward for the audience?
- ZOMG TIE!! Skyfall :)
- Did anyone else think that all the Zero Dark Thirty clips were huge spoilers for the people who haven't seen it yet?
- Question- what if someone had a proper fear of sharks? What would the Jaws theme do to them? I think Fassy is terrified of the film.
- Christopher Plummer is brilliance. "Pick someone your own size." Haha. Also, wasn't Amy Adams just terrifying in The Master? I was happy at Anne Hathaway's reaction. It was genuine. Also, "It came true" is one of the best openings to an Oscar speech ever.
- Popcorn ladies are here again!
- Oh those lucky bitch college students. Man, Hugh Jackman and George Clooney were in that crowd.
- Sandra Bullock's hair accessory was gorgeous. Just saying. Happy Argo won editing. Also, Silver Linings Playbook had terrible editing. Why was it nominated?
- I love that Jennifer Lawrence introduced Adele. She's a huge fan, as she said in the Jimmy Kimmel interview.
- Adele is so perfect. All these people got to see her perform live! :P She was actually singing also, and not screaming. Although, apparently screaming ensures a standing ovation. Really people?
- Nicole Kidman is such a class act. She's a genuine fangirl. Tarantino looked really pissed though.

- Daniel Radcliffe presented with Kristen Stewart. I didn't realise she was on crutches (through no fault of my own). They played the Harry Potter music. Thanks for remembering after 10 fucking years, Academy.
- Salma Hayek's introduction was so funny. As was Meryl Streep's later on.
- George Clooney is lovely. He presented In Memorium. I cried. Nora Ephron :( Also Barbara Streisand was really good.
- Chicago crew came to give the music awards. RICHARD GERE! Life of Pi won Best Original Score and "Skyfall" won Best original Song. Oh god, I love Adele.

- Best Screenplays were next. Argo got Adapted and Chris Terrio's speech was very nice. And then Quentin Tarantino won Original. YAAAYYY! Django Unchained isn't the greatest but the man definitely is. Last year Woody Allen won this award. Two years, two movie gods.

- He and Charlize are neighbours :O
- Poor Leo. Of course he is not there.



- Oh Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas came to present Best Director. I would love for Fonda to introduce me. She's so theatrical, it's great!
- Yaay Ang Lee won! He seems like the sweetest man who ever lived. He said some of the funniest things. Re: the cast- "I can't waste time talking about them" and about thanking his lawyers- "I have to do that." Also, NAMASTE DUDE!

- Jean Dujardin is a cutie. YAYAYAYAY JLAW! And she fell, but it was okay because Jean Dujardin, Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper all ran to her rescue. And her speech was really endearing given the circumstances. "Happy Birthday Emmanuelle!"

- Btw, Hugh Jackman = perfect man.

- Did Meryl Streep even look at the envelope? Also, Joaquin Phoenix at the Oscars everybody-

So much pain.

- Daniel Day-Lewis is the first man ever to get three Best Actor Oscars, and though I did not care for his Lincoln performance (the voice annoyed me too much), it could not have happened to a better man and actor. His jokes were brilliant. Next film should be a comedy with Meryl, amirite?

- Jack Nicholson is boss. And woah, Michelle Obama! Anyways, yaaaayyyy for Argo! 

Ben Affleck's speech was the best. I was watching his and bezzie Matt's Good Will Hunting win yesterday and this is another classic. My favourite part was him thanking the lovely Jennifer Garner, "I want to thank my wife, who I don’t normally associate with Iran, but I want to thank you for working on our marriage for ten Christmases. It’s good. It is work, but it’s the best kind of work and there’s no one I’d rather work with." George Clooney was just the classiest man throughout.

- The final song was nice.

        And there you have it. The winners were pretty good and the hosting was somehow still tolerable and ZOMG DANRAD AND ENJOLRAS!
