"Once there was a Hushpuppy." - MY FAVOURITE PERFORMANCES OF 2012

This has been a year of some really good performances. Choosing a top 20 was pretty difficult. I hope you like them.

Honourable mentions: Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln, Dane DeHaan in Chronicle, Ranbir Kapoor in Barfi!, Dwight Henry in Beasts of the Southern Wild, Rosemary DeWitt in Your Sister's Sister.

20.
Ben Whishaw in Cloud Atlas

For a film that had a lot of actors playing various characters, Ben Whishaw's portrayal of an optimistic, gay musician in the 1930s stands out the most. Whishaw can show vulnerability and cockiness in equal measure and delivers some of the most heartbreaking scenes of the movie.

19.
Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained

The biggest problem for Waltz, in my eyes, was that he was competing against his own portrayal of Col. Hans Landa, which is such a perfect performance that Dr. King Schultz was bound to be a tad disappointing. Still, the way the man delivers lines is an absolute pleasure to watch and he has technically become the most rewarded actor in Tarantino's repertoire so that's definitely something.

18.
Jean-Louis Trintigant in Amour

Amour is a film that is barely in my lists because I could not watch it with an objective perspective. However, Trintigant is so perfect and tragic and helpless and human in this film that he had to be mentioned.

17.
Rebel Wilson in Pitch Perfect

No one this year has made me laugh as much as Wilson's Fat Amy did. A brilliant comic turn.
"I'm gonna finish him like a cheesecake!"

16.
Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables

After having watched him as the tough and hardened Wolverine all these years, nothing is more surprising than seeing Jackman tackle a role like Jean Valijean. The Oscars he hosted proved that he could sing, but to show this much emotion and heartbreak and guilt, all while singing, was marvelous to watch. His is my most favourite Oscar nomination of the year.

15.
Kareena Kapoor in Talaash

I do think that Kareena Kapoor is one of the very few high-profile Bollywood actresses today who can actually act and there are certain kinds of roles that she was made to shine in. She did it in Jab We Met and she does it again in Talaash. As the seductive and mysterious Rosy, Kapoor crackles on screen and entices us to fall for her charms.

14.
Robert De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook

De Niro's Pat is unlike all the characters I usually associate him with. He is a man who is trying to control everything around him- his book-keeping, his family, his life and though that isn't really possible, De Niro just brings so much heart and warmth and humour to the role. Save the dance, all my favourite scenes in the movie have De Niro shining in them- the heartfelt talk with his son played by Cooper, chasing the annoying neighbour kid down the street, his first meeting with Tiffany and of course, his words of wisdom at the end. Also, he is one of the most accurate onscreen depictions of a normal dad I have ever seen.

13.
Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone

When I had read the plot of the film, I thought it will be one of those downright weepers and Cotillard will have to play a stereotypical, super melodramatic role of an amputee. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a cold serenity about her but that just makes her entire arc that much more believable. She obviously suffers and feels, but the role is so much more than that. All my favourite moments of hers are when she does things that overcome her difficulties, like swim in an ocean or dance on her wheelchair or give strength to someone losing a fight or revisiting the whale who caused her injuries.

12.
Ezra Miller in The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Talk about making a role more than just its stereotype. Miller's Patrick is a gay teenager, yes, but he is also outrageous, funny, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, caring, broken, and just the greatest friend one can ask for. It is one of the loveliest and liveliest portrayals of a young person I have ever seen and Miller is just wonderful in this role.

11.
Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook

If one looks at Lawrence's Oscar-nominated performance in Winter's Bone and then the one in SLP, they can see how insanely talented an actress she is. Tiffany is loud, unpredictable, sexy, manic, sad, humorous- all at the same time. Lawrence has made her an unforgettable character and I am sincerely praying that she wins that Oscar.

10.
Logan Lerman in The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Keeping my feelings towards his looks aside, Lerman has been a total revelation in this film. Charlie in the book was nice but I had my issues with him. But Lerman's Charlie is a character I connected with very closely. I honestly feel that if I had been in an American high school, I would be almost exactly like him. I really got him, and the way Lerman portrays his joys and sorrows and the final secret just made me love him so much more.

9.
Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook

Never in my life did I think that I would be this in love with Bradley Cooper's acting skills. I have always thought of him as an attractive douchebag, and though Pat Jr.'s honesty can sometimes be inappropriate and mean, it is also incredibly endearing and frankly, lovable. My favourite thing about Cooper's definitely Oscar-worthy performance is his reactions to the other actors. For a film that thrives on chemistry, Cooper shines the most.

8.
Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe/Magic Mike

You know what I just said about being surprised by Cooper's talents. Just amplify that a 1000 times and you get my total astonishment at McConaughey's acting skills that he has shown this year. On one hand I was mesmerised by his charisma as Dallas in Magic Mike and on the other hand, totally creeped out, but in a good way, by his ruthless Joe in Killer Joe. Bravest performer of the year.

7.
Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises/Les Misérables

What a year it has been for Hathaway. Her Selina Kyle paves a whole new path of her own, different from her predecessors. She is sexy and ruthless but not without a conscience. She brings levity in a very bleak film and is just a joy to watch in all her femme fatale-ness. Her Fantine is very much the opposite. The most tragic character of all in the film, her "I Dreamed A Dream" is one of the most bold and raw pieces of  acting that I have seen. Truly deserving of that Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

6.
Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained

For all our "Poor Leo" sighs, it is still heartening to see that here is a man who keeps giving brilliant performances without ANY rewards in return. Calvin J. Candie is the kind role that I had been praying for Leo to tackle because he always plays such sad characters. Calvin is plain gleeful in all his malevolence. It's a joy to watch him be this horrible yet hilarious, "rambunctious" man. He has rewarded my curiosity with a total attention-grabbing behemoth of a role, and I am sure that one day his time, too, will come.

5.
Denzel Washington in Flight

My knowledge of Washington is abysmally lacking. He just is one of those actors who you grow up knowing are great at what they do. Flight proved this belief. His Whip is a broken, addicted man who throughout the film, has to come to terms with his problems, but he keeps brushing them aside and thus delves further into them. It is only at the end does he do something so extreme and heartbreaking that we know and he knows how truly lost he is. It is a role that requires a lot of denial and desperation in Washington's part and he does so beautifully.

4.
Joaquin Phoenix in The Master

I had to debate a lot between who to put higher- him or Washington. But Freddie Quell is a performance of a lifetime. I believe the term 'animal magnetism' has never been symbolised better. There is an beast-like quality to Quell, the way he walks and fights and talks. At the same time, we are drawn to him and whatever it is that conflicts him or compels him to behave the way he does. Phoenix is just magnificent here and oh man, what a great fucking face!

3.
Rachel Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea

Hester is lovely. Her confusion between choosing a stable, coma-inducing marriage and an unstable but passion-ravaged affair and what it does to her and what it makes her do is just a fascinating character study. As I read somewhere, she makes you fall in love with melancholy. And all this is because of Weisz's beautifully nuanced portrayal of Hester. She is gorgeous and conflicted and sad and silly and doomed, but she truly is lovely.

2.
Denis Lavant in Holy Motors

I don't get this movie, but it is just alluring to watch and the biggest reason for this is Lavant's chameleonic performance. The way he moves from one persona to another, always believable and awe-inducing. My favourite bits of his performance are however whenever he is the "real" Oscar, whoever that is, in the car, on his own or talking to his chauffer. There is this sense of weariness and disappointment there- of what and caused by what, I don't know. But it just makes me feel so much for him.

1.
Quvenzhané Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild

I don't know how much she acted or was taught or whatever. All I know is that at 5 years old, she auditioned for the role of Hushpuppy and the director Behn Zeitlin was so impressed by her, that he even changed the script to suit her personality. Her performance just blew me away. She is like a ball of pure energy in the film. Her narration is fantastic and so is her chemistry with her onscreen dad, Dwight Henry. From her outbursts to her poignant parts, she won me completely over. She made me cry, she made me marvel and boy, can she stare down a beast?! One of the strongest, most human and beautiful performances of the year and I am so glad that she has become the youngest Best Actress nominee ever. No one deserved it more.

"Calm down, crazy."- MY FAVOURITE EVERYTHING ELSE OF 2012

I kind of went on a list-making frenzy when I started with my end-of-year lists. These are the ones I won't be making separate posts for because of time constraint, but they are awesome nonetheless. Also, my favourite performances and films will be up soon.

  • Silva, Skyfall- A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and my god, I loved both of them.
  • Bane, The Dark Knight Rises- Not easy following Heath Ledger's footsteps, but Tom Hardy did a great, powerful job.
  • People, The Cabin in the Woods/ Paranorman/ The Hunt- People suck.
  • Joe, Looper- Love the concept of your older self being the baddie. Bruce Willis was super cool.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man- For being a shit, unnecessary film and wasting Emma Stone.
  • Old Age, Amour- We are all going to die.
  • Hugo Weaving characters, Cloud Atlas- Weaving is one of my favourite villain-playing actors and here, he goes from being an oppressive nurse to an assassin to the devil himself.
  • Joe, Killer Joe- Oh Matthew McConaughey, you creepy, creepy man. Never set foot in KFC.
  • Stephen, Django Unchained- I found him so much more villainous than his master Candie. A total bastard.
Biggest Villain of 2012- Loki, The Avengers
As I had written in my review, it isn't easy for a relative newcomer like Tom Hiddleston to hold his own against so many big actors playing such super persons, but he does it with a lot of snarkiness and aplomb.

  • Hushpuppy. Beasts of the Southern Wild- Brave, wild, amazing.
  • Hulk, The Avengers- Mark Ruffalo and Joss Whedon have made me a fan of the big, green, rage monster. Smash all the aliens! And Thor! And Loki!
  • Patrick, The Perks of Being a Wallfower- Oh god, I want a best friend like him!
  • Selina Kyle, The Dark Knight Rises- Best part of the film by a batmile.
  • Fat Amy, Pitch Perfect- Aca-awesome.
  • James Bond, Skyfall- A human Bond is just that much cooler.
  • Richard Parker, Life of Pi- Magnificent.
  • Princess Merida, Brave- Pixar has given us a great first heroine.
  • Tiffany, Silver Linings Playbook/ Weird Girl, Frankenweenie- Because they're both weird and awesome and are going to become my role models (hey, this is my list!).
Best Character of 2012- Marty, The Cabin in the Woods
A prophet and a badass? He is going to become a cult god. Great work by Fran Kranz.

  • Cloud Atlas- Just look at all the actors and ALL the characters they portray.
  • Django Unchained- Tarantino might just have outdid himself with this cast.
  • Skyfall- Craig, Dench, Fiennes, Bardem, Whishaw. Stellar.
  • Silver Linings Playbook- There is a reason why this is the first film in 31 years to get nominations in all four acting categories. Love the other supporting actors too, most notably, Anupam Kher.
  • The Dark Knight Rises- I don't care about Batman half as much as I do about Alfred, Gordon and Fox. And in this we get Selina and Blake too. Plus, love it when Cillian Murphy shows up.
Best Ensemble of 2012- The Avengers

  • Everything Suzy Bishop, Moonrise Kingdom- Another memorable Wes Anderson female character with a penchant for individualistic fashion.
  • The surgery machine, Prometheus- When I was sick last year, I kept wishing for this machine so that I could get cured in jiffy. Mighty useful it would be.
  • Joe's gun, Looper- Uber awesome.
  • Shawarma, The Avengers- I, for one, am very happy that Shawarmas are getting the respect and love they deserve.
  • Kirsten Dunst's bitchface, Bachelorette- To master that would be a dream.
  • The Aston Martin, Skyfall- Try and tell me that your heart didn't skip a beat when this first appeared in the movie.
  • The time machine, Safety Not Guaranteed- Because I need one. Woodstock is waiting for me!
  • Bong cup, The Cabin in the Woods- Do I need to explain myself?
  • The Bat, The Dark Knight Rises- Do I need to explain myself again?
Coolest Object of 2012- Princess Merida's Hair, Brave
I made this list so that I can have Merida's wondrous, fiery tresses topping a list. I can build an altar to them.

Favourite Quotes of 2012-

"C'est le temps de l'amour"- MY FAVOURITE SCENES OF THE YEAR

Here's the thing. Somehow, my favourite scenes this year have either been fight scenes or mainly scenes with singing or dancing in it. Is my true Bollywood spirit seeping through? I don't know, but I do know that the following are some of the most memorable moments of 2012, cinema-wise.

Honourable mentions- Pitch Perfect finale, Accordion interlude in Holy Motors, Calvin J. Candie and the skull in Django Unchained.

10.
Johnny Depp's cameo in 21 Jump Street

For a film that was surprisingly hilarious, its funniest moment comes when original 21 Jump Street man and my movie god (who still very much has it going on if he'd stop coming in crap) reveals his secret identity. Laughter ensues.

 9.
The flight scene in Argo

I admit that I did not know about this whole part of history until I watched the film so the finale was actually really nail-biting for me. However, from what I have read, it thrilled even those who knew about it. The plane lifting off is one of the happiest, most uplifting moments of last year's movies and in my eyes, warrants that Best Film Oscar.

 8.
The voting scene in Lincoln

Speaking of uplifting scenes, this part of Lincoln really stood out for me. I am not the biggest fan of the movie and I was pretty bored throughout but here, when I did know the result and was still so moved by it, I loved the film (but that's it).

7.
The beach dance in Moonrise Kingdom

Heaven would be being in a place and a time and a scene like this.

 6.
The cell breakdown in The Master

In a way, this could have been in my favourite fight scenes. I just love the contrast between these two men which is most prominent here. Freddy goes batshit crazy in the cell, and Dodd just stands there, cool and composed, looking on. Brilliant.

 5.
Gena's and Clyde's kiss in Bachelorette

What makes this scene even more amazing is the fact that the song that leads to the kiss in the film, The Proclaimers' legendary "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", was put in afterwards. I love Lizzy Caplan and Adam Scott and their chemistry here is to die for.

 4.
"Who Were We" sequence in Holy Motors

Holy Motors is a film full of unforgettable, incredibly original scenes. This one, though not the most unique sequence in the film, is my favourite because it is so poignant and mysterious and beautifully shot. In a way, it is the antithesis of the beach scene in Moonrise Kingdom, but it is just as touching.

 3.
Hester underground in The Deep Blue Sea

I realise also that my list is full of either really happy, life-affirming moments or incredibly sad ones. This one is both in a way. Hester, played immaculately by the lovely Rachel Weisz, comes to the train station to commit suicide after another fight with her lover when she is transported back to the time when she, along with her husband and many other people, were hiding out there during the London air raids. There was a song and a glimpse of hope in a lot of misery and Hester finally realises that life, however terrible it may become, is still worth living.

2.
"I Dreamed a Dream" in Les Misérables

This scene gave me shivers when I first saw it. I understand why Anne Hathaway is going to win an Oscar for a scene that barely lasts five minutes. The range in it is astounding- sadness, nostalgia, disappointment, bitterness, anger, and finally, the acceptance of such a faith. The way I see it, this song captures the last moments of hope in a person, how it does fight to stay alive but life has other plans. I cried.

 1.
The final dance scene in Silver Linings Playbook

This scene was made to be loved by me. A kooky dance number in a ballroom competition- come on! It is fun and romantic and sexy and has one super uncomfortable moment but that just makes it better and they play "Fell In Love With A Girl" and there is tap dancing and the leads staring into each other's eyes a lot- TOTES AMAZEBALLS! Happiest, most awesome scene of the year.

"I have an army." - MY FAVOURITE FIGHT SCENES OF 2012

It's that time of the (next) year again- list making time!! Last year I made a special list of villains because they stood out to me. This year, while I was listing down my favourite scenes, I noticed that a list-worthy number of them are fight scenes and so here we are. I do love a great cinematic fight. For the record, my favourite cinematic fight of all time is probably Mark Darcy versus Daniel Cleaver in Bridget Jones's Diary.

Note: Needless to say really, but this is a very spoiler-filled post.

Honourable mentions- Merida and Elinor vs Mor'Du in Brave, People vs Zombies in Paranorman, Abraham Lincoln vs horse-throwing vampire in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

10.
Elizabeth Shaw vs Alien Baby in Prometheus

I admit that I watched this scene with my face half-covered, but god it was memorable. Fighting an enemy that is literally growing inside you and having a goddamn cesarean to get rid of that- kudos to Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth.

9.
Django versus Candie's minions in Django Unchained

This is the shooting scene right after two major characters have been killed and Django has to defend himself and protect Broomhilda. This film is full of shooting, but here it is both outrageous and scary and cool and the blood just explodes out of people. It bloody fun (yes, pun very much intended).

8.
Gollum versus Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

A battle of wits and riddles, this was probably my favourite bit in the book. And while the horrid 48 FPS technology managed to make many scenes unbearable to watch, it works here as Gollum becomes even more realistic. And Martin Freeman as always is amazing. I was really pleased with how it turned out.

7.
Cid versus Jesse in  Looper

Well, it isn't exactly a fight scene as much as it is really cool scene with someone actually getting disintegrated in slow mo. Poor Jesse did not know what he was getting into, and good lord Pierce Gagnon is terrifying and awesome. Total jaw-dropping scene.

6.
People versus Monsters in The Cabin in the Woods

Speaking of, how cool was this scene when it happened? This scene sort of unites the two threads of the story in one beautiful and unbelievable blood bath, quite literally. And man, that homicidal unicorn.

5.
The two brothers versus Mad Dog in The Raid: Redemption

Another film with a lot of really cool action scenes to choose from but it all culminates to this final battle between the deadliest of the foes and the two brothers teaming up against him. Keeps one completely rapt.

4.
Batman versus Bane in The Dark Knight Rises

Bane is shown as someone with absolute brute power and we can actually feel that everytime he lands a blow on Batman (YES, ON BATMAN PEOPLE!). It is very scary but also extremely believable seeing the badass caped crusader actually having his back broken by this beast of a man.

3.
Mallory Kane versus Paul in Haywire

Is it me or does this scene remind one of the elevator scene in Drive? Like that scene, this too is a mixture of sexiness and violence, with mood lighting. The fight between Gina Carano and Fassy feels almost like a choreographed dance with one very sensuously brutal end.

2.
Hulk versus Loki in The Avengers

I am right to assume that everyone has watched this film and loved this part and I'm not spoiling it with this gif, yes? Just look at it. It's hilarious. AND it's even better in the film. Genius.

1.
James Bond versus Patrice in Skyfall

If I had not made this list, this would be my favourite scene of the year. I have watched this movie thrice now and every time I can't stop myself from gaping when this sequence takes place. The neon lighting, the shadows, the firing of the gun, the fact that you do not know who is who until the very last moment- oh god it is beautiful. Roger Deakins deserves all the Oscars for this scene alone and action scenes have never looked more gorgeous.

More lists coming up shortly. What did you think of this one?
